What is Reflexology ?
Reflexology is a very safe, non-intrusive, and holistic therapy that is well established and respected in the field of complementary therapies. It works with the body’s own ability to re-balance itself and heal when necessary (also known as homoeostasis). There are reflex points on the feet that correspond to organs, systems and structures within the entire body. These points when stimulated help to restore the body’s own healing process and brings about a state of deep relaxation.
Brief History about Reflexology
Reflexology, an ancient practice originating from Egypt, India, and China, made its way to the Western world thanks to Dr. William Fitzgerald’s pioneering work in the early 1900s. He introduced “Zone therapy,” which emphasized the connection between reflex areas on the hands and feet and various organs and areas of the body within the same zone.
Building upon Fitzgerald’s foundation, Eunice Ingham played a pivotal role in refining and popularising reflexology during the 1930s. Ingham believed that congestion or tension in specific areas of the foot reflects similar conditions in corresponding parts of the body. Her contributions have shaped the modern understanding and practice of reflexology.
Preparing for a treatment:
Drink plenty of water the day before and day of treatment
Wear loose-fitting clothing (if possible) to be as comfortable as possible
Inform me of any allergies before so I ensure the products I bring are suitable.
What a treatment involves:
Before any treatment, the client’s detailed medical history will be discussed to identify any current or previous issues. Any medical details discussed will be treated as strictly confidential.
The patient will be required to remove their socks & shoes and will be made comfortable in a reclining chair. The feet will be examined before starting the treatment as I will also conduct a foot reading which will help to identify which reflexes I may need to concentrate on and to ensure there are no contra-indications.
The massage has a precise order and has a firm pressure using the side and tip of the thumbs and fingers. Every area of both feet will be massaged. Sensitivity of the feet varies hugely but areas of the body which are particularly imbalanced tend to show as increased tenderness in the related reflex areas in the feet. Reflex sensitivity varies from person to person, so pressure is tailored to the individual. The massage should not be uncomfortable to even the most sensitive of feet. I can help to interpret the tenderness felt, if any.
The treatment should last approximately 50 minutes and the number of treatments varies depending on the condition being treated. After the treatment I will discuss with the client any areas where I have found an imbalance and home care advice specifically catered to you. This will include dietary suggestions, breathing exercises and general health/wellbeing advice that can help with the specific imbalances I have found. Also, with any conditions you have told me about during the session or from your medical history. A treatment plan will also be tailored to meet your individual needs and to balance and strengthen the body’s systems to encourage the body’s own healing.
Side Effects of Reflexology:
The effects of reflexology are unique to the individual. As Reflexology is not intrusive, there are very few side effects to treatment. Most people feel very relaxed or sleepy and enjoy a good night’s sleep, though some are highly alert and refreshed and full of energy.
A common side effect is an increased number of visits to the toilet as Reflexology encourages the elimination of toxins from the body
Most people fall asleep within the treatment or feel tired after so I always suggest to have some time to yourself to just chill after the treatment, if possible.
