Perimenopause & Menopause

Perimenopause and Menopause

Reflexology is a wonderful therapy to help support women in their journey through the perimenopause and menopause. It can also make some of the changes in your body more bearable and relieve the stress and tension that can cause so many side-effects such as:

Perimenopausal / premenopausal symptoms

  • Hot Flushes

  • Night Sweats

  • Palpitations

  • Fatigue

  • Anxiety

  • Insomnia

  • Achy Joints/Muscles

  • Mood swings

Postmenopausal Symptoms

  • Vasomotor Symptoms

  • Osteoporosis

  • Headaches

  • Depression and/or anxiety

  • Cardiovascular Disease

  • Irritability

  • Insomnia

  • Mood swings

The symptoms of the menopause can be helped by reflexology by working on specific reflexes on the feet during treatment such as:

  • The pituitary gland to help create some hormonal balance as well as concentrating on the ovary and uterus reflexes.

  • The Pineal gland is the gland responsible for our circadian rhythm and sleep so this can be worked on clients who are struggling with insomnia and sleep disturbances.

  • The Adrenal Gland is located on top of both kidneys and these are pumping out adrenaline when we feel stressed and anxious. We are then in ‘fight or flight mode’ as if we are under attack. Working this gland on both feet can have a very instant calming effect and put the client into a more restorative and relaxed state.

In 2016 women who had symptoms of menopause were given reflexology treatments twice weekly for six weeks. The study concluded that women reported fewer hot flushes, sweats and night sweats as a result of regular reflexology treatments (Gozuyesil & Baser, 2016)

Whilst Reflexology cannot stop the natural process of menopause, it can certainly help to bring balance, calmness and a greater control to your body and mind at this physically changing phase of your life.  In the initial consultation I would like to understand how the perimenopause/menopause is affecting you and what symptoms you have so that I can then tailor the treatment plan specifically for you. I also provide my clients with the ‘Five Pillars of Menopause’ booklet for additional supportive information as part of their treatment plan.

Five Pillars of Menopause:

  1. sleep– how can you achieve your 8 hours?

  2. exercise– weight-bearing exercise to help with bone strength and increase our metabolism

  3. relaxation– deep relaxation allows the body to heal and repair

  4. diet and supplements- which foods will optimise your health. Are you supporting your health with the correct supplements?

  5. purpose– find your flow! Do something that brings joy to your life!
